Services for Patrons with Disabilities

Physical Accessibility

Our three-story library building is accessible to patrons with mobility impairments. The first floor, which is on two levels, has a ramp and the second and third floors are accessible by elevator. Doors are more than 32 inches wide to allow passage of a wheelchair. Special tables in the Information Commons and the Creative Studies balcony are designed for wheelchair users. Restrooms on the first, second, and third floors have facilities which can accommodate a wheelchair. Lowered water fountains are on each floor.

If any library patron is in need of emergency assistance, a refuge alarm is located on both the second and third floors of the library next to the elevator door. Just pull the alarm and wait at the location. When the alarm is pulled, the college's University Police Department is automatically notified and University Police officers will be dispatched to the location as soon as possible.

Two separate entrances, close to the handicapped parking, are available for patrons with mobility impairments (map). Access is by key card only. Qualified patrons wishing a key card must submit an application with the Disability Access Services Librarian.

Assistive Technology

Special equipment and software in Butler Library to assist patrons with disabilities includes:
  • A Visual-Tek - a video magnifier which can enlarge reading and writing material up to 60 times its original size.
  • The Reading Edge - a computer which scans printed material and uses a speech synthesizer to read it aloud. It is designed for individuals with visual impairments, dyslexia, reading disabilities, or who have other difficulties accessing print. It is housed in the Assistive Technology Lab, room 110F in the StudyQuad. Patrons who wish to use the Reading Edge must schedule a demonstration and training session with the Disability Access Services Librarian. A Braille dictionary is also located in that room.
  • Computer software for use in the Assistive Technology Lab includes DragonNaturallySpeaking (speech-to-text software), JAWS (reads aloud electronic text from web pages), Kurzweil 3000 and scanner (allows scanning and reading aloud text from print materials), and Zoomtext (screen magnification software).
  • Victor Book Readers (digital talking book DAISY players) are available from the Equipment Loan desk in the Information Commons area of the library.
Research Assistance

Librarians provide individualized reference assistance for people with disabilities. Ask at the Information Commons if you need any kind of assistance using or locating materials. The library staff will retrieve books and provide photocopying for journal articles and reserve materials. Call the Disability Access Services Librarian at least 24 hours in advance to request this service.
