WGS201 - Introduction to LGBTQAI2P+ Studies

Resource Days Submissions: Unit #1 - Beginnings

Zachary - Sydney Lucas sings "Ring of Keys" (from the Tesori/Kron musical FUN HOME, based on the graphic novel by Allison Bechdel) at the 2014 Drama Desk Awards.

Dr. Ryan-Bryant - This is a clip from the Canadian TV show Schitt's Creek in which David Rose explains to Stevie Budd what pansexuality is, using wine as a metaphor.

Samantha - “Honey” by Kehlani is a queer song written by a queer artist. The song reflects Kehlani’s experiences and emotions related to queer love and relationships. The lyrics celebrate the beauty and joy of queer love. She expresses her affections and adoration for her partner, embracing their connection. This song is a sincere expression of love and desire, reflecting Kehlani’s openness about her identity and relationship. The music video for “Honey” features Kehlani enjoying moments of carefree joy and intimacy about her identity. The visuals compliment the song’s theme of love and self expression. “Honey” stands out for its role in promoting visibility and acceptance within the LGBTQIA2P+ community.

Eric - “Love Me, Normally” by Will Wood is a song that based on certain lyrics and visuals in the music video, is somewhat focused on the impact of neurodiversity on romantic relationships. It can also be read as a commentary on the stifling nature of “traditional” romance in general. Which is a subject that many queer individuals, aromantic and/or asexual individuals in particular can relate to. The jazzy ballad, with a smooth feel that signals the feelings of what is traditionally a love song, is a poignant tone for a song with lyrics that challenge that idea of traditional love in the first place.

Kyle - This song by Lady Gaga which has won two VMA's and best female video in 2011 has been a key piece of conversation regarding LGBTQAI2P+ identities. It's often been associated to the LGBTQAI2P+ movement because of her mentioning Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual. Lady Gaga as an artist has been very outspoken in supporting the LGBTQAI2P+ movement.

Molly - This whole album is extremely powerful and dives into black queer experiences. I had a hard time picking which of the songs to upload because the music videos for this artist's, Blood Orange, songs 'Hope' and 'Jewelry' are also very compelling. But, I chose his song 'Dagenham Dream' because it discusses a common experience within the queer community to shrink parts of oneself in order to fit into the monolith. It also brings up how parents of queer children force them into performing a version of themselves that will be accepted, at the expense of allowing their children to truly be themselves. He then goes on to say that he has avoided going into spaces that he would receive too much attention. I think this experience has led to the formation of spaces specifically for the community, like gay bars, so that you don't have to "shrink" parts of yourself.

Cadence - In the Netflix original show, The Umbrella Academy, one of the main characters, Viktor, comes out as transgender to his family in season 3 of the show. This is because the actor who plays the character, Elliot Page, also came out as transgender, and they wanted to respect his real-life identity. Many fans were angry because of "deviation from the source material" of the comic book series it is based off of, but even though he came out, nothing changes about the story in any significant way. It is a step forward for transgender representation in the media, and like he says, "It's who I've always been."

Abdul-Halim - It is a YouTube video showcasing the difference between older and younger gay people.

Cindy - This clip is from the movie Bottoms, it is about 2 unpopular lesbians in high school, PJ and Josie that start a fight club to lose their virginities to their crushes. The movie was directed by Emma Seligmam and written by Rachel Senott who also plays the character PJ in the movie.

Samantha - This is a clip from the TV show "A League of Their Own" which is a remake of an older movie. It's about one of the first professional women's baseball team. This clip represents the idea that LGBTQIA2P+ people have always existed and were everywhere. They just had to hide, just like they are in this bar together. It also represents the bar scene of the community and how important it is to be able to have a place where you can be yourself. This clip shows that people of any background can be queer and to not make assumptions. It teaches not to stereotype people. It represents all types of identities but this clip focuses on sapphics, specifically lesbians. It focuses on identities within the lesbian community such as butches and femmes. I like that this show, which includes this clip, has representation for butches because they are not often represented. Butches deserve as much representation as all other presentations/identities do.

Daniya - The resource I picked it from a movie on Hulu called "please like me ". it strive to address on what queer people in community goes through when it comes to they mental health and how important mental health is to everyone no matter how you identify yourself. I watch the causally movie it self but the triller also shows a slims of what is shown in the actual movie itself. this is very Important to me because a lot of people today struggles with knowing how important mental health is so I can only imaging the struggle that people in the LGBTQ community goes through 1. trying to fit in this evil world 2. dealing with their own struggles

Canyon - This clip is from a popular TV show, Shameless (US), following the life events of a family in Chicago, with their struggles of addiction, poverty, pregnancy, and more. In this specific clip, you will see Lip coming into the families house greeting his brother Ian, and boyfriend Trevor, whom is a transgender male. What plays out is a very common experience for anyone who falls under the transgender umbrella, allowing cisgender people to gain insight on the daily occurrences of being out as transgender.

Alicia - This is a clip from the show Sex Education where Dr.Milburn explains to Florence Simmons what asexuality is when Florence comes to her office with questions about her sexuality.

Aiden - this is a "you should know" video posted by iDabble video magazine, which is a magazine for skateboarding that is completely based online, and in this video they interview Chandler Burton who is a pro skateboarder and a big name in the LGBTQ community in skateboarding. Burton talks about how they were closeted and how they got into intricate makeup, they also talk about what it takes to really make it into your dreams and how much skating means to them. they were actually the first queer skater that I had stumbled upon a few years ago, they will always be my favorite skater by far, and shortly after that i started to notice a decent amount of more queer skaters starting to pop up and get recognized. I also think its very important that I encountered one of their video parts because I literally would have had no idea there were any queer skaters at that time, and even now there is very few compared to the rest of the of the community. I hope in the near future there will be a lot more queer skaters because skating is for everyone, and we can look at the skating community in a more diverse way.

Kiara - One of my favorite shows on Netflix is Sex education. It adheres to the LGBT community and highlights many misinformed perspectives on who and what people are pertaining to race, class, gender and sexuality. It shows raw and informal feelings and experiences of people that are hetero and homosexual. One of the clips shows teachers seperating the girls and boys teaching them not to have sex at all and making it look scary and terrible. In times and still today schools try to teach students to be abstinent rather than teaching them the safe practices around sex. Students are more than likely to have sex especially during puberty. The other clip shows our Non Binary transgender, Cal, who ran away due to not feeling understood and accepted in today's society. Not only is she Black, but queer so there are a couple of barriers placed against them. Often times when people don't feel accepted or understood they tend to have signs of depression not knowing who or what they can tend to. The world needs to be a nicer and more accepting place, because no one should be feeling like that.

Marz - I think that this clip sums up how things should go in the real world. People should be able to live as who they are without judgement and ridicule. As long as the person is happy, and not harming themselves or others, there should be no debate on whether or not they deserve respect.

Devin - This is a disco cover of an earlier song on the same label, that pumps up the energy and makes the message even more liberating and joyful. I love house and disco and I originally heard this before I had fully figured myself out and even then I knew it affected me, but afterwards, even more so. Also, it was actually what inspired the title of the Gaga song already mentioned on the list.

Alexandra - Clip from the film, Ma vie en rose (My Life In Pink). This film focuses on the trans identity of Ludovic, a 7 year old's struggle with coming to terms with her gender identity and with the acceptance of family and the neighborhood.

Kris - Previously in the show, character, Pisaeng, was confronted with entering a gay bar but he walked away. Now confronted with the fact that he is in love with his friend, he comes back to the gay bar and actually goes inside. While inside, he sees gay culture up close for the first time before leaving when someone recognizes him.

Bee - "Role of a Lifetime," by Payson Lewis, from bare: A Rock Musical

Nakishah - In the show “Degrassi” it shows Adam explaining to his friends about how he transitions from a woman to a man . I personally like this clip because when i had first watched this show, I was very unfamiliar to what exactly transgenders had to go through and this show not only helped educate me but it also is a favorite because it shows how they are able to accept him despite what others may think.

Destinee Wright - Attached is a clip from a popular serious “Pretty little liars”. In the scene Emily Fields has came out to her mom but unfortunately her mom was not happy and was not understanding to Emily.

Luke - It's ok to be gay! This is a song that a popular content creator wrote about himself and his community. Before he goes into the music he explains how he loses subscribers when he mentions that he is gay. So he wrote this song as his way of explaining how he feels about himself and in attempt to help and inspire his followers that might also be gay. This song is also entertaining to those who are not in the LGBTQ community and even people who don't care about it because of the humor that he puts in this musical.
