The Madeline Davis Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Archives of Western New York was founded in 2001 to collect, safeguard, and provide access to archive and manuscript materials that document the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities of Western New York and Southern Ontario. These archives house records of more than fifty diverse organizations and the manuscript collections of many individuals who have had a significant impact on the history of the region. Here you will find some of the materials from the archives that have been digitized and made available online. The LGBTQ Pin/Button Collection has been donated by many various community members and organizations, and amassed over a lifetime of activism and political efforts. It is our great honor to display them in this digital exhibit.
In 1978 Harvey Milk calls on gay people to gather in D.C. the next year to protest the anti-gay campaigns of Anita Bryant and her ilk. Organizers are stymied by internal conflicts until Milk’s assassination galvanizes them and a date for a national march is set. But will anyone show up?
