Citation Management Tools & Resources

The following tools are good citation management resources and software. Buffalo State University and Butler Library DO NOT endorse the use of a specific management tool. This guide is merely a list for you to choose from and make your own decisions. Some of the tools are free or have free versions. Some of the tools are subscription. We do not endorse any of the tools, nor do we suggest subscribing.

Mendeley
Mendeley is a reference manager and academic social network. Make your own fully-searchable library in seconds, cite as you write, and read and annotate your PDFs on any device. Mendeley Desktop is free software and is installed on all computers in the library labs.
Zotero
Zotero [zoh-TAIR-oh] is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, cite, and share your research sources. It lives right where you do your work—in the web browser itself. You may also install Zotero Desktop and the Chrome Connector on your computer.
RefWorks
Subscription: ProQuest's RefWorks allows researchers to gather, organize, read, and cite their research materials. It also makes it easy to collaborate with others on joint projects. ProQuest's Primo, the library's search tool, links to RefWorks, but the college no longer has an institutional account, and new individual accounts cannot be created using the school's group code (though previously created accounts still work, in a limited capacity).
EndNote
EndNote is a personal citation/bibliography desktop software program. EndNote helps researchers organize references in a database, which can be used to format citations and create bibliographies automatically in word processing software. EndNote Basic, a free but limited web-based version, is available as an export option in the library's Primo All Search.
