WGS101 - Introduction to Women & Gender Studies

Resource Days Submissions:

Madeline: Scene from the show Derry Girls. In the scene, Clare comes out to Erin as a lesbian. The two squabble back and forth throughout the clip.

Larkin: I chose a song that I see as a representation of bisexuality. It's called "Kissing Girls' by Grady, and I think it's a realistic and respectful representation. The only line the artist uses to suggest his love interest is bisexual is "we both love kissing girls." Often times in social media if someone is anything other than heterosexual, their sexuality can be seen as their whole personality, or their only defining trait. But in reality, sexuality is just a part of what makes everyone who they are.

Jayson - In a show called Stranger Things will is talking to Mike, and explaining how much his friend El appreciates Mike and he turns his head and starts to cry because he knows that he wanted to say all these things to Mike but he doesn’t believe Mike would fall in love with him they way he had falling in love with Mike.

Toheebat - This is a song titled "Labour" the song describe what women go through in the society how women are expected to cook, clean, nurse, do hard labour ,not being able to make mistake ,having to apologize first . how women are just like a robot being program to do things and when they go against it they are at fault.

Will - This scene from I saw the tv glow, shows the two main characters inside a planetarium. This scene is Maddy's monologue to her audience, Owen. Throughout the film the two characters struggle finding what feels right to them. A scene earlier in the film shows a young Owen, with a transgender flag. The film uses unique methods to convey feeling of uncertainty in character. Owen and Maddy compare themselves to characters in a fictional TV show because it is what looks right to them. Both characters are too scared to confront their true identities until they feel unsafe in their own skin and it becomes unbearable. This monologue shows that Maddy can't live this way anymore and plans to bury herself alive to "save herself". She goes on to say that she will willingly bury herself alive and "escape", thus the planetarium background; in order to save herself and Owen from facing the fear that is their true feelings.

Nourah - This song has been representing the power and strength of woman for years now. Run the World by Beyonce is a song filled with woman dancing together and coming together to overcome the men in the music video. Her lyrics emphasize the power we have as women and what we can overcome without letting the sexism distract us.

Emilee - I chose "I kissed a Girl" by Katy Perry because she sings about kissing a girl and liking it. This shows sexual identity because this was the time period Katy started experimenting and finding out she liked girls along with men. The song is her embracing her new found sexual identity.

Halle - This Disney channel theme songs traditionally illustrates a particular gender identity. Girls doing their hair and makeup getting ready for school.

Asialyn - My resource is from the 11-season show, Shameless. Ian, a gay male with pronouns he/him is being introduced to a new group of people with pronouns and sexual identities that he has never heard of before. He is new to all of this and is around this time, getting comfortable with his sexuality. He is curious, but respectful when listening to the group explain who they are.

Emma - This is a PSA with Hillary Duff that spreads awareness to offensive language that some people may use without realizing. Hillary explains that using "gay" as a bad word is offensive to those who identify as gay and that the girls wouldn't want to be treated that way if it were them. Using a teen star that kids grew up with makes it more probable for younger audiences to listen and learn how to be more inclusive in everyday life.

Ava - The song Born This Way by Lady Gaga showcases pro LGBTQ and proudly supports the community. This song is about uplifting queer voices as well as advocating their rights. While Lady Gaga expresses her views on the LGBTQ she also proudly disses the anti-LGBTQ legislation. This song also uplifts women and minorities.

Luno - This was a scene pulled from Season 2, Episode 9 of the queer series, Pose. In this scene, Elektra Abundance was confronted by a white transphobic woman while having dinner with her house daughters (which are young queer folk who are taken in by house mother's, and given a place to stay and create their own family). During this encounter, the lady informs Elektra and her daughters that they are being loud and distracting with their "cackling" laughs. Of course, that was not the real issue she had with them. Elektra knew this, and asked her what she really meant. The lady went on to say that she is no dummy, and that she knows when there is a group of men pretending to be women, and says that exactly who they are. This causes Elektra to "read her for filth" and proceeds to tell this woman off. She comes at her for her lack of authenticity as a woman, the privileges she was "blessed" with as a white woman, and criticizes her for being "...a basic bitch". She goes on to say that none of those quality make her a woman. She again, criticizes her for her fake and cheap clothes that she wears, only to flip it back around and say that they had to fight for their rightful place at this dinner table. She also adds that their presence in the restaurant threatens her, because of her own insecurities as a woman. From there, she tells the lady to go back to her clam chowder, and shallow conversations, as they are not leaving. I love this scene because not only is it so entertaining to watch, Elektra makes very solid arguments to the debate of transwomen being women.

Nancy - I chose this scene from the movie, American Psycho. It represents that male trait of dominance, as you can see Patrick Bateman (main character) showing off his business card because he believes his is the best, yet his co-worker usurps him with his own business card. The whole environment and characters of this scene, to me, represent the stereotypical male. It illustrates how males wish to portray themselves as "bigger than the rest" sort of like how male gorilla puff their chest out to differentiate themselves from others. The male need to be top of the hierarchy.

Caelum - I uploaded the song “Michael” by Franz Ferdinand. This song, while explicit in nature, is about a homosexual relationship. The song writer specifically wrote “This is what I am, I am a man” to discourage any other interpretations. The song was inspired by the band going to a club and watching two friends (both male) dancing with each other in a very sexual way.

Karisma - The song "Who Run the World" by beyonce is a powerful anthem that celebrates female empowerment and strength. It relates to gender identity by emphasizing the importance of women women's roles and contributions in society. The song goes against traditional gender roles and stereotypes, promoting the idea. that woman are strong, capable, and. deserving of respect and leadership. This song can help inspire individuals to embrace and assert their gender identity with confidence and pride.

Ella - This scene is from the TV show Schitt’s Creek. In this scene one of the main characters David’s boyfriend Patrick is singing a song he wrote for him. I chose this scene because is a good example of gender identity because David and Patrick are a gay couple. It’s a cute scene and their relationship is a big part of the show.

Dalana - "Euphoria" illustrates gender and sexual identity through its diverse characters, particularly focusing on Jules, a transgender girl navigating her transition and societal acceptance. The show also explores bisexuality through Rue experiences with romantic relationships involving both genders. By addressing themes like consent and healthy versus toxic relationships, "Euphoria" provides an authentic portrayal of contemporary teenage struggles related to gender expression and sexual orientation in today's society.

Ryann - The story by Conan Gray talks about the struggles with self-acceptance as well as how society plays a part in people's relationships. But for the purpose of the assignment, the song talks about Conan's sexual identity. It was difficult for him and his potential partner, who is also a boy, to express their love for one another due to social judgment.

Cierra - My resource is from greys anatomy. It shows a non- binary patient being treated at a hospital. They correct the doctors pronouns. The clip is a good example of an older generation doctor who is new to having a non-binary person, how they may be confused and act taken a back. Versus a newer doctor correcting their mistake, apologizing and going about their day. Both doctors were respectful, however one approach was more genuine and understanding then the other.

Morgan - This scene in Modern Family, though funny, describes the difficulties that individuals have coming out to people around them. Mitch talks about how he had to come out to his father 3 times because Jay wouldn't accept that his son was gay. Cam and Mitch represent a gay couple in this scene and describe the differences between their coming out. For Cam, it was much easier because it was obvious since birth. While being described in a silly manner, the scene captures the difficulty that some people have when they decide to come out to family or friends. It can be especially difficult when they are stuck in their older ways of thinking as was the case with Jay.

Brandon - YouTube video of "I'm just Ken" from "The Barbie Movie" 2023.

Aleah - In the song Chanel by Frank Ocean he talks about his first love who is another man. He says that the love changed his life, and although he shares many experiences with men and talks about his sexuality being fluid he’s never and won’t put a label on it. He feels that as an artist who is sharing his experiences, he wants to give you something you can feel and “you cant feel a label or a box”.

Dejah - The song "All of me" by John Legend demonstrates a straight sexual identity. He made this song in dedication to his wife; the song is talking about having a strong relationship. He says that he will love her regardless of any flaws and he will give himself to her and asking if she will do the same.

Gerline - In this show named "Star", a transgender woman named cotton is not accepted by her mother. This scene shows a preacher praying she turns back into a man.

Stacey - The link I provided shows one of my all-time favorite shows on Netflix, titled "Heartstopper". The two people showed are Nick and Charlie, and they have come a long way from this first kiss but let me not try to spoil any good details. I chose this short clip off YouTube showing both cisgender males taking an interest and liking in the other. Charlie, on the right side of this clip, identifies as a male who is gay, or into guys in other words. On the left is Nick, who had been straight up until this moment, he identifies as a male who is Bi-Sexual.

Hollyn - Nick was confused about his feelings for his friend Charlie, who is openly gay. He decides to do research on the top and discovers that he might be gay too.

Jeanette - my resource gives more information about what is intersex and how it happens in the first place. this gives anyone a good resource to anyone who doesn't understand what intersex means. it's a great way to educate yourself.

Jeanette - I am Jazz become a top-rated show, the show is about a girl named Jazz and her transition from male to female. I think this a great resource for anyone who would want more information on how transitioning people live. but also to get educated on transgender identities. I think Jazz is a very strong girl to go through the disrcamtion and sigma and love how she is open about her struggles.

Audrey - Together, they elected LGBTQ+ and pro-equality allies to office, shifted the landscape for LGBTQ+ employees in the U.S. and around the globe, and made it safer for LGBTQ+ people to be out, proud and visible in schools, workplaces and communities. But the fight is far from over.

Adayshia - In this scene, Wilhelm admits it was him in a previously exposed video of him and Simon.

Brandon-Kace - "I'm Just Ken" from the Barbie Movie (2023). Resubmitting sorry, I didn't realize I had to type my explanation out here, I wrote it on paper instead. I interpreted the Barbie movie as a way to explore concepts about the sexes/gender and showcase it to the public, in a fun, funny, flashy iconic way. (Also to make money.) It shows a world where the rules have always been the way it has been, a world called "Barbieland". Barbies have all the jobs/run the government/town, and the Ken dolls just goof off all day and enjoy the beach. However, things change when Barbie and Ken go to the real world, and Ken sees that men are depicted throughout history as awesome figures that ruled and achieved, as well as seeing the current men in the world, and how they hold power. This causes Ken to go on a power trip about how men are awesome since in his homeland they are made to feel like they aren't as important and have no worth besides being Barbies counterpart. Whereas Barbie is now facing internal struggle seeing how the real world is very opposite what she is used to with how the women hold all the power in Barbieland. (She also learned that men make more money than women do in real life). She eventually meets the woman who created the first Barbie doll who admits that she originally created it to inspire girls to imagine their potential and what they might be when they grow up. However, she notes that the real world often doesn't imitate what she and her dolls had in mind and that the times have changed since when she first created them. Instead of having to be "perfect" or dress fancily like how the Barbie's often did, the creator or Ruth Handler tells Barbie to just live, and embrace all the messy/uncomfortable parts of being a human, the feelings, the parts of your body that you wish were different. Effectively, telling Barbie and the viewer that women don't need to be held to this "perfect standard" of how a woman should look or be, from sources such as the Barbie doll itself or other sources that portray an "ideal woman". Eventually Ken realizes he is more than just a "Ken" doll to a Barbie doll by accepting that he doesn't need to earn Barbie's approval/love in order to fulfill his role, he is comfortable just being himself, and learns self love/acceptance. They both go their respective ways at the end of the movie having different perspectives/outlooks on life and themselves. The Barbies back at home realize there should probably be some change as to how Barbieland is run. The Kens are no longer on their power trip and start to love/accept themselves without the need fr Barbies approval/validation.

Krystal - This is a clip from The Owl House where Amity and Luz kiss. Amity and Luz represent a wlw (women love women) relationship, or in some cases lesbian. Amity (purple hair) identifies and lesbian, and Luz identifies as bisexual (brown hair.) There are many different genders in this show as well as sexualities, but Amity and Luz are a perfect representation of lesbian love.
