Buffalo State students are invited to enroll in LIB 389 / WGS 389 (CRN 2649) Social Justice Through Zines in fall 2025. Offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:05 to 4:20pm, the course will examine social justice movements through the lens of zines. Students will study zines in the library collection and make their own.
ZINE SCENE is a two-day series of in-person zine workshops and a zine exhibit on April 24 and 25. The events are free and open to the public, with RSVPs required for the workshops (register now!).
On April 24, we will have our first workshop: Healing Through Zines, led by local zinester and book artist Laura Chenault, from 4:30 to 6:30pm in Butler 316. This will be followed by a brief reception in the Global Lounge on Butler's 3rd floor; this reception will feature a zine exhibit, including zines to browse and zines to take home, plus free food. We will finish off the evening with a second workshop: Zines as Resistance, led by Jordan Marie Roth from 7 to 9pm.
The following day, we will close out the event with a final workshop: Zine as Memoir, Archive, and Diary, led by Alexandra Gallant-Lee from 1 to 2:30pm in Butler 314.
This event is funded by the Faculty-Student Association and Butler Library, and co-sponsored by Africana Studies and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
This hands-on workshop will teach you how to transform a traditional academic poster presentation into a zine. Zines are DIY magazines that can be made by anyone for a low cost. We will discuss research-based zines we have made, demonstrate folding techniques, and support participants to draft their own zines.
Are you a member of the Buffalo State community? The Butler Library Zine Collection wants your zines! Whether you created a zine for class or just for fun, we'd love to add it to our collection.
In order to donate your zine, please fill out the Zine Submission Form.
You can drop off your zine at the Library's Ask Us Desk or you can send it to librarian Julie Setele.
Happy zineing!
