The Data Curation Network has an excellent primer on research data for scientists. It's a great place to start with managing research data.

 

Multiple models exist for managing research data including Research Data Framework from NIST  and Research Data Lifecycle (Biomedical Data Lifecycle) from the Longwood Research Data Management Working Group at Harvard.
