Discussions about Artificial Intelligence (AI): Preparing for AI in your class

An overview of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education and current uses of AI. Then, we will open the discussion to participants to talk about opportunities and concerns about AI.

AI Policy Considerations

Syllabus Statements

Types of AI Statements

AI syllabus statements fall under three broad categories:

  • Prohibited AI Use
  • Conditional AI Use
  • Open AI Use

Examples:

Prohibited AI Use

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are strictly prohibited for all coursework, assignments, and exams in this class. This includes using AI to generate ideas, outlines, drafts, or final work products. All submitted work must be entirely your own. Violations of this policy will be considered academic dishonesty and may result in a failing grade for the assignment or course and potential disciplinary action.

Conditional AI Use

This course permits limited use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Bard, under specific conditions. The goal is to leverage AI as a learning aid while maintaining academic integrity and ensuring the development of your critical skills. Failure to follow guidelines or misuse of AI tools will be treated as academic dishonesty and may result in penalties, including a failing grade for the assignment or course.

Open AI Use

This course embraces using artificial intelligence (AI) tools as part of the learning process. We recognize that AI is becoming integral to many professional fields and believe that learning to use these tools effectively and ethically is a valuable skill. Your grade will be based on your demonstrated understanding of the course material, critical thinking skills, and ability to effectively use and evaluate AI tools rather than on whether or not you use AI. AI is a tool, much like a calculator or a textbook. The insights, analysis, and conclusions you draw from its output truly matter. Your unique perspectives and critical thinking are invaluable and cannot replace AI.

AI Syllabus Statement Considerations

  • Is your statement compliant with campus-wide or department policy? Are there other sections or courses that you need to coordinate with to avoid conflicts in policy?
  • Clearly define what AI use is in your course. AI tools may be integrated into software used in your coursework (e.g., MS Office, Adobe Photoshop), and if necessary, clearly state the expectations of their use.
  • When AI use is allowed, provide guidelines for additional expectations that may be required. This includes procedures to identify AI use, citation rules, and student responsibilities when using AI-generated content.
  • Is it necessary to provide assignment-specific instructions for AI use?
