An Institutional Repository (IR) brings together all of a college or university's research under one umbrella, with an aim to preserve and provide access to that research.

IRs are an excellent vehicle for working papers or copies of published articles and conference papers. Presentations, senior theses, and other works not published elsewhere can also be published in the IR.

SUNY Buffalo State encourages the use of all items in the Digital Commons for fair use purposes such as private study, teaching, and research. SUNY Buffalo State holds copyright to various digitized collection materials contained within the Digital Commons; permission for purposes other than private study, teaching, and research must be granted by the curator or administrator for the particular collection. Permission is not necessary for fair uses; the Library requests, however, that fair uses include an appropriate notice of copyright and attribution. Works of the government of the United States and, in general, works created before 1923 are in the public domain and permission is not required to make use of these works. If you believe your work has been inappropriately displayed on the Digital Commons please contact digitalcommons@buffalostate.edu or the E. H. Butler Library

SUNY Buffalo State cannot grant permission for publication or specific use of those items for which it does not hold copyright; permission can be granted only by the holders of copyright in the materials. It is the researcher’s sole responsibility to identify the copyright owner and to obtain any necessary permissions required under United States copyright law.

The E. H. Butler Library offers various resources on Fair Use Exceptions and making copyright determinations. Please visit our webpage for further information.

Institutional Repository Posting Rights for Authors

Not all publications allow for full-text postings of publications in institutional repositories. Some open-access journals will allow published manuscripts and some journals will allow pre-published manuscripts to be publicly shared through an institutional repository. Sherpa Rome is the best public source to look up author manuscript rights
